The ORA Asterospicularia is a new release from ORA (Oceans. Reefs, and Aquariums). Not often seen in the hobby Asterospicularia is an octocoral from Indonesia and a few Pacific Islands.
Soft Corals which are also known as Alcyonacea, is an order of corals which do not produce calcium carbonate skeletons, but instead have spiny skeletal elements called sclerites which give these corals some degree of support while giving their exterior a grainy or spike like texture that deters potential predators. They can also be found in a variety of unique shapes and beautiful colors.
Many Soft Corals will thrive in nutrient-rich waters and do not require intense amounts of light, making them extremely hardy. Almost all Soft Corals use symbiotic photosynthesizing zooxanthella as a major energy source, but will also readily eat any free floating food, such as zooplankton from the water column.
