OGA Nepthea Tree Coral is a great start for beginners and experienced hobbyists alike. This fast-growing coral offers great movement from its long branches and fine polyps as they dance in the water column. They have a soft pink to pastel purple color depending on how blue or white your lighting is. They make a great option for single island corals or if you just need to fill that space with little light or waaay too much light these corals can handle it all. These corals are like other types of soft corals in that they tend to stall for a bit when first added to a tank, sometimes taking months to hit their growth bloom. However, once they do you will be giving pieces to your reefing buddies in no time!
Soft Corals which are also known as Alcyonacea, is an order of corals which do not produce calcium carbonate skeletons, but instead have spiny skeletal elements called sclerites which give these corals some degree of support while giving their exterior a grainy or spike like texture that deters potential predators. They can also be found in a variety of unique shapes and beautiful colors.
Many Soft Corals will thrive in nutrient-rich waters and do not require intense amounts of light, making them extremely hardy. Almost all Soft Corals use symbiotic photosynthesizing zooxanthella as a major energy source, but will also readily eat any free floating food, such as zooplankton from the water column.
