OGA Pom-Pom Xenia is a fast growing farmed coral species similar to Purple Cespitularia. Pom-Pom Xenia is easily identified by its short waiving stalks that can be variations of pink/purple/cream, their most prominent feature being that the polyps at the end of each stalk will pulse or “wave” on their own. Pom-Pom Xenia is one of the only corals that can move on their own, however depending on water conditions and lighting they may not always pulse. The reason for their pulsing ability is still debated and if they are not pulsing it does not mean they are unhappy or unhealthy. I personally find they will pulse more aggresively when in “slower” water with low flow. It is a very hardy coral that will thrive in a variety of stable aquarium conditions. We reccomend putting your Pom-Pom Xenia on its own small island in the sand away from other rock structures so that it can be contained.
Soft Corals which are also known as Alcyonacea, is an order of corals which do not produce calcium carbonate skeletons, but instead have spiny skeletal elements called sclerites which give these corals some degree of support while giving their exterior a grainy or spike like texture that deters potential predators. They can also be found in a variety of unique shapes and beautiful colors.
Many Soft Corals will thrive in nutrient-rich waters and do not require intense amounts of light, making them extremely hardy. Almost all Soft Corals use symbiotic photosynthesizing zooxanthella as a major energy source, but will also readily eat any free floating food, such as zooplankton from the water column.
