The Long Tentacle anemone is one of the aquarium hobbyists’ jewels, we’ve all wanted one or owned one from time to time and they can be both fantastic and frustrating reef members all at the same time. These anemones are great for pairing with clown fish and other anemone friendly fish as well. They can grow quite large in the ocean though in the aquarium you will usually see them stay less than a foot in diameter. Once they reach those sizes they will start to split in half and form two full anemones! This can be great but with enough time and no action, they can start to fill your tank up and start moving to new locations in the tank and bothering and stinging corals along the way. They also tend to find power heads in your tank and foam covers for them is recommended when first getting used to your anemones. When first being added to the tank they will tend to inflate themselves and float around the tank if you leave your circulation pumps and return pumps on, so it is recommended you turn them off for about 30 minutes while the anemone have a chance to take hold on your rocks. We also recommend you place the anemone where you like it to be in your tank however it will most likely move to a different location than the one, you’d like so it’s best to add an anemone to your tank when you have few corals or no corals so you can then start to evolve your reef aquascape around the anemone’s desired location. Even though there are some things to be careful of when owning an anemone, surprisingly being stung isn’t one of them for most people! They are a bit sticky to the touch when grabbed by the tentacles and if brushed against soft skin such as under the arm can cause slight rashes to appear however most people show no sign after handling the bubble tip anemone, They are beautiful additions to any reef aquarium and need to be treated with respect but when they are usually tend to be the first thing people will compliment you on when seeing your tank and they are one of hobbyists greatest tv shows!
