The Sand Sifting Starfish is a well know staple in the hobby, tanish brown to grey with light banding this starfish isn’t one you’ll be getting for its impressive looks as chances are you’ll only rarely see it. However, it will be playing a vital role in your aquarium ecosystem. It feeds off detritus within your sand bed while also turning the sand over and mixing in oxygen as it moves beneath. This allows for better nutrient movement for all the bacteria and copepods living within as well as leading to a better filtered tank for your fish and corals. They can even prevent annoying diatoms cyanobacteria pockets on your sand bed just by doing their own thing all night long, they are nocturnal, so chances are best you’ll see them at night when passing by your tank for a snack from the fridge.
